The walks for the season that runs from September to June, have two themes running through them:

The Monday walks follow a long-distance route I have devised from London to the sea at Littlehampton. The aim is to give a sense of adventure in walking through a delightful slice of English countryside towards a destination from where, in order to proceed any further, you would have to swim to France. Every section is lovely and complete in itself so there is no obligation to complete the whole route; just choose the walks that appeal to you.

The Saturday walks are designed to show aspects of English history in chronological order. In the course of these delightful walks we shall make short visits to locations that illustrate the importance of that particular historical period. There will be no long lectures but I shall take a few minutes to explain what we are looking at and why it is important.

MONDAY, 30TH JANUARY

LONDON TO THE SEA

Stage 4: Christ's Hospital to Billingshurst

(This hike has been organized in association with the Canadian Women's Club but is open to everyone)

This is a pleasant, easy walk through the fields and woods of the county of Sussex. We start from Christ's Hospital station which was built to serve the eponymous school founded in the city of London in 1553 by King Edward VI. In the nineteenth century it removed to its present location and is now co-educational.  The boys still wear the traditional, ancient blue and yellow uniform (which has been adapted for the girls) and which has given the school it's popular name of the Bluecoat School. We have lunch in the charming village of Slinfold and from then on the route is almost entirely on paths all the way to Billingshurst Station.

Historical walk #4: The Middle Ages

A circular walk from St Albans

This walk is designed to give an inkling of the importance of the church in the mediaeval period. In pre-reformation times it was immensely powerful, wealthy and even had its own laws which made it, to some extent, a state within a state.

Our walk commences in St Albans where we shall see the cathedral which was originally the Abbey Church of St Alban named after England’s first christian martyr. St Albans is also the well-preserved Roman city of Verulamium so it will give those of you who missed the Roman walk an opportunity to appreciate the importance of that period, too.

From the cathedral we walk across Verulamium Park to enter the ancient estate of Gorhambury. Our route makes a sweeping curve to pass Gorhambury House and the ruins of Gorhambury Manor. After lunch at a delightful old country pub we walk through fields and woods to return to St Albans.

Date: Saturday, 4th February

Distance: 10 miles

Cumulative height gain: negligible

Meet: 0900 near the ticket office on the ground floor of London St Pancras Railway Station from where local trains depart. Note that it takes several minutes to walk from the Underground station to the meeting point.

1   Parties are limited to twenty walkers after which a waiting list will apply.

2   The cost per walk is £12.00 per person (£6.00 for students) excluding fares and lunches. The train fare depends on the numbers attending. The price quoted is for a Cheap Day Return but the fare is usually considerably less if the GroupSaver (four tickets for the price of two) scheme is in operation. The total cost of the guide's fares is shared by the group. I buy the tickets and we settle up on the train. Please reserve your place by sending the guiding fee by PayPal via my website, or mail a cheque made out to Hugh Dyer-Westacott. 46A Station Road, Amersham, Bucks HP7 0BD.

3    I purchase rail tickets on the day of travel so if you have to cancel at the last moment please call me on 07929 628123.

4    Refunds will be given if you can find someone to take your place or the walk has to be cancelled.

5    Bring suitable footwear (preferably boots), waterproofs, a spare sweater, trail snacks, and water.

6    Lunch is usually eaten in a pub.

7    English walking etiquette requires muddy boots to be removed, or covered in supermarket bags, before entering pubs.

8    Bathroom facilities are limited. They are usually available on the train, at some railway stations and at the pub. Please inform me if you need some privacy on the trail so that the group can stroll on and wait for you.

9    Sorry, no dogs because their presence invalidates my insurance policy.
